INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS
Deadline November 14, 2003
Objective. Reel to Real is an annual, competitive, international event. A non-profit media arts and education society, Reel to Real is dedicated to showing the best in culturally diverse, non-stereotypical, and humanistic programming for children and youth. Our objective is to broaden young people’s exposure to and appreciation of film and video from all over the world.
Criteria for selection. Reel to Real is looking for films that are imaginative, evocative, innovative, inspiring and entertaining. Entries will be evaluated for their technical and artistic merit.
Categories and awards. We will accept feature-length dramas, shorts, and animated films and videos. Documentaries in all subject areas are welcome, including science & technology; language arts & media education; nature & environment; history & geography; social & cultural studies.
Professional Jury Award
Best Picture — Professional Jury Award (for all ages).
National Film Board of Canada Award
Best Animated Film or Video (for all ages).
Youth Jury Awards.
Youth Jury panels will award two feature films:
- Best Picture — Youth Jury Award (ages 9 and up);
- Best Picture — Youth Jury Award (ages 13 and up).
Youth Jury panels will award four short films:
- Most Inspirational Film or Video (ages 9 and up);
- Most Inspirational Film or Video (ages 13 and up);
- Most Innovative Film or Video (ages 9 and up);
- Most Innovative Film or Video (ages 13 and up);
Other awards may be added. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony scheduled to take place March 5, 2003.
Entry
The entry form should be completed and returned to the Festival by November 14, 2003 along with a preview videocassette of the film, which should be in 1/2 VHS (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM) format. All non-English speaking films must have English subtitles.
Selection. All entries will be viewed by a qualified pre-selection committee appointed by the organizers of Reel to Real. Entrants will be notified of the decision regarding their film(s) by January 30, 2004.
Presentation. Accepted films for the Festival can be exhibited in 35mm formats with optical or magnetic soundtracks, or on DVD and BetaSP, VHS (NTSC) or DigiBeta. The number, date(s) time(s), and location(s) of screenings of films is at the discretion of the Festival.
Date & Place: March 2 - 11, 2004 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Technical Requirements. Each film or video entered MUST be on 1/2" VHS (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM), regardless of original format. All films invited for presentation must meet the following requirements:
- be aimed at audiences between ages 6-19.
- be 35mm, BETA SP, VHS NTSC
- be in their original language with English subtitles
- have been completed after January, 2001.
Documentation. Entrants are strongly encouraged to include the following to ensure accurate press coverage if chosen for the Festival:
- Synopsis in English, including cast and credits
- 3-5 posters
- B&W or color stills or slides — publication quality
- Video clips (VHS or BETA SP for TV promotion)
Selected Films. 35 mm films and Beta SP videos selected for exhibit must be received in their original format no later than February 20, 2004 (unless other arrangements are made).
Every reasonable care will be exercised to protect all submissions from loss or damage. However, Reel to Real does not assume liability for such loss or damage to preview materials, however caused. Once a film or video has been accepted for participation detailed shipping instructions will be sent.
