Frequently Asked Questions
REEL TO REAL presents the best in contemporary international children's
cinema to Vancouver audiences. The screening programs include live-action
and animated shorts and features from around the world. REEL TO
REAL workshops allow children to learn about filmmaking in an interactive,
hands-on environment.
Who is the audience?
Children and youth between the ages of 6 and 19 can enjoy REEL TO
REAL, with their families, caregivers, and teachers.
Why was REEL TO REAL chosen for the name?
The name REEL TO REAL was chosen because we believe film viewing
is an active and interactive experience. When you come to REEL TO
REAL you watch a film, discuss it, and participate in a filmmaking

committee composed of parents, educators, filmmakers, and a Youth
Advisory Board.
What kinds of films are selected?
We select both Canadian and international films, including live
action dramas, documentaries, and animated features and shorts.
The films must be of high quality and entertaining to a young audience.
What ages will the films are appropriate
for?
The Family Film Festival is aimed at 9-19 year-olds. Age recommendations
are in our program guide. The School Program is for students in
Grades 5-12.
How will I know which films are appropriate
for my child?
Beside each film is indicated the age group or grade level for which
the film is intended.
How will you handle subtitles for younger
children?
For some Family Film Festival screenings there will be a reader
at the non-English language films who will read the subtitles to
the audience. This is practiced at many other Festivals around the

be read at some of the School Screenings. Please refer to individual
films in the Program Guide.
Will the films be introduced?
All the films will be introduced either by REEL TO REAL Director
Venay Felton, the director of the film, or another appropriate person
