REEL
TO REAL IS FIVE YEARS OLD!
Message from the director
Venay Felton
A SPECIAL YEAR
It’s our fifth birthday and to help us celebrate we
have invited some special guests. Gemini Award-winning director,
Eleanore Lindo, joins us for the Vancouver Premiere of her celebrated
new film, TOUCHING WILD HORSES, starring
Jane Seymour and Mark Rendall. This powerful drama is about finding
forgiveness in an isolated and untamed environment, a theme of this
year’s festival.
We welcome back our loyal audience and extend invitations to new
viewers and friends. For five days our presentation of award-winning
films will inspire and entertain children, youth, and adults in
a festive atmosphere. Adding to the festivities are discussions
with participating directors, actors, and producers.
THIS YEAR’S PROGRAM
Put together with the help of our Youth Advisory Board and a team
of dedicated volunteers, our 2003 program offers more than a few
treats. From over a hundred films, we have crafted our strongest
program to date. This year’s highlights include short films
by young filmmakers, a first feature by the South African director,
Stefanie Sycholt (Malunde), and
vibrant animation from the National Film Board’s Talespinnners
Collection. Favourite filmmakers of past REEL TO REAL Festivals
returning with new works this year include Mo Simpson (Kosovo:
A Fragile Peace, Flipping the World) and Cliff Skelton (Truth
and Betrayal, Where Did You Sleep Last Night?).
We hope you will enjoy the variety of features, documentaries,
and animated films for all ages in the following programs:
• Reel Focus- our program for elementary school students
• Take Two- our program for secondary school students
• Opening night and award celebration
• Saturday Program for Families with Reel
Activities
On this special occasion, I’d like to extend sincere thanks
to our staff, our sponsors, dedicated volunteers, Board of Directors,
and loyal audiences, all of whom have been integral to our growth
and success. Without all of you, we could not continue to present
the best films for youth and families from around the globe.
Enjoy the celebration!
